“We must accept finite disappointment, but we must not lose infinite hope.”
--Martin Luther King
When I woke up this morning, it felt as if it was going to be a tough day to have hope. In the wake of the violence and protests and tragedies in Ferguson, Missouri, I found myself wondering what good could come of such a struggle. I was reminded of the words of Martin Luther King who beckoned us to never lose hope. I was reminded of how we are to seek truth and to build relationships that are based on unconditional respect for one another.
Each of us has our view of what the world is. We have our interpretations of what the struggles mean and what we are to do as a result of events in life. I would urge us to remember that with infinite hope comes joy. With joy, we look for the good in others instead of the bad. We, like MLK, can keep the right focus as we move forward.
My desire for this nation is that of seeing people as people. My desire is that we don’t see a person as label, but as a creation of the Almighty. So, on a day filled with tension and struggle, I would challenge you to remember that disappointment is finite, hope is infinite, and joy is a catalyst for good to come out of struggle.
