“Only in the darkness can you see the stars.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
I love that quote by MLK, Jr. It is the essence of a life lived with hope for what can be. I remember when I was 11 years old and my Aunt Hazel died giving birth. I remember running out to the field close to my Grandparents’ house and hiding behind some farm equipment. I was so upset at the loss and couldn’t imagine that the world was still spinning. I was angry because she was an incredible Aunt, and I just didn’t think it was fair. I felt that I was in full-on despair and couldn’t even imagine how my uncle felt. I remembering trying to think about the good stuff at the funeral, because that was what people were supposed to do. It took some time, but I finally decided that I wanted to see the good stuff from her life and not remember her only for leaving too soon.
It can be pretty difficult to see that there is hope in the future when you have lost something or someone that is important to you. It is even easier to be angry at God and others for taking them away from us. Allowing ourselves to live in that place without ever looking up at the stars, robs us of the joy that they would have wanted for our lives. If no one has ever told you before, you are important and you deserve to experience joy. Look up at the stars of possibilities that are in front of you and you can join me, as a person who found hope in the tough times.
So, if you have ever found yourself wondering if there was hope for the future, if you have ever been in that place of trying to figure out how you were going to come out of the situation that you were in, then you are officially invited to join my club. We may even come up with a secret handshake. Now, in this club, our objective is to keep our focus on what the possibilities are for us. When we focus on the despair part, we lose our minds. When we focus on the hope part, we find our center. It is in that calm center of the storm of our lives that we realize, we are going to be alright. We know this because we have people around us that love us. We know this because we can see the stars of possibility in the future that lies before us.
Since you are a member of the 100 Days of Joy Club now, I have an assignment for you. This is a good one too. Your assignment is to list out three things that are good that the future could possibly hold for you. For the next 24 hours, just spend time thinking about those good things when you take a break from your work. Those are the stars in your dark night and they are worth the fight.
