Music speaks what cannot be expressed
Soothes the mind and gives it rest
Heals the heart and makes it whole
Flows from Heaven to the soul.
If you are like me, you went through musical phases. When I was in Jr. High, I loved Rock! When I was a Freshman in high school, I loved country. As a Sophomore, I got into rap. When I was a Junior, I listened to Christian music, and some rock. I can think back to distinctive times in my life when the music expressed how I felt better than I could. The music that I listened to could help me to be sad at a loss, intense when I was upset, or happy when I was seeking joy. Sometimes it was the beat of the music that kept me on top of the world. Other times, it was the lyrics that spoke truth and helped me to understand and work through my pain. Regardless of the direction that I was headed emotionally, the music was there to walk with me, to comfort me, to help me.
Music has always had this kind of mystical power in our lives. When our children are born, we sing them lullabies to soothe them and connect with them. And when we reach the end of our journey, special music is chosen for the celebration of our lives. Music is the medium that says what we are thinking but can’t always say. It plays a vital role in expressing our feelings. It represents who we are to the world and what we hope to see in others.
I think that we need music to unlock the emotions that are housed within us. I think that music, itself, is a rhythmic dance toward healing and hope and joy. Think about those times in your life when you were high or when you were low. What did your musical choices reflect in you? I have found that I am drawn to music that soothes and inspires me now. As I write, my two favorites are Beethoven and Mozart. I feel my soul lighten and my mind free of the clutter of the day. I find joy in the release that music brings me. I find comfort in knowing that the relationship that I have with music will always be there, helping me to find the joy in the struggle, the triumph, and in every moment of life. What music speaks to your soul today?
