So often, we come to those who would teach us something and try to ensure that we know more than they do. We try to define ourselves as people who cannot be bested. The challenge with this type of thinking is that it leads to filling our cup of knowledge with air instead of substance. When we go through life struggling to fill our emptiness with more emptiness, we find only turmoil and pain. Peace comes from realizing that the ego-driven thoughts provide nothing and are meaningless. It is in giving up the emptiness that we have been trying to fill our cup with that we can find something of true substance to sustain us.
I think about what it would be like to try to pour air into a container. When would you know that it was full? How could you tell if you had gotten the right amount, or even the right oxygenation? If you were trying to fill a cup with a liquid, it would be much easier. You would know when the cup was full and you would know if you had poured in the right liquid. In life, our meaningless thoughts create a world without meaning. We struggle for more money or more recognition or more of what the ego would say fills our cup. By doing this, we create a meaningless world for ourselves and we begin to lose hope. As we struggle more and more to fill our emptiness with more emptiness, we find that we create fear. We are afraid that it will never work and so we do more of what isn't working. Einstein defined insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and anticipating new results." The same model creates predictable results.
The truth is that God did not create a meaningless world. We created our own meaningless world. The sad truth is that we have created our own struggles by looking at the world the way that we do, using our ego to try and create meaning from thoughts that have no meaning. We are seeing a reflection of our thoughts in the world around us. When we see suffering and pain, it is a reflection of the suffering and pain that we have first thought. That was not what God intended. His Spirit connects us to the source of all creation and gives us the right to His existence. Separation from God was a choice and is the great illusion of this time. We cannot be separate from something that is who we are. We are made up of the substance that is God. He is in us and we are in Him.
My encouragement to you today is to fill your cup with substance instead of nothingness. Fill your cup with what the Spirit has always intended for you and find peace.
