If we are created in the image of God, then we must be a part of God's definition of self. To me, that is an incredibly profound statement. It changes the perspective that I have on the Spirit. It begins to strip away the "box" that I have placed God in and starts to reshape my mind to understand His definition of Himself.
It wasn't as much that my preacher told me that I was unworthy as it was the "popular Christian culture" that existed during my formative years. I heard over and over again that we were all sinners and that we were all unworthy. I heard a number of times that I was a disappointment to God because I kept sending Him back to the cross. As a young person, the most logical result would be that I would see myself as "never good enough." This would also indicate that I was created as a disappointment, though. As I develop in my spiritual journey, I have begun to see the truth that those wrong lessons were not real. They were the ego's attempt to keep people unworthy so that those some people would cling to the self-identification instead of the spirit-identification.
Nothing that is real can be threatened. Nothing that is unreal exists. The truth, what is real, is that I was created as a part of the definition that God had for Himself. Love created me to love. Kindness created me kind. Holiness created me holy. Connectedness created me to connect. The pressure is off to try to find out how to be like God when you realize that you were created as a part of His self-definition. You are worthy because worthiness created you worthy.
I want to clarify that this does not mean that people should give in to the cravings of the ego. The Spirit, which is your truth, is significantly different in perspective than the ego, which is illusion. Peace comes from accepting that you were created to love, to be kind, to be saved, and to save the world. You are needed in this world with the gifts that are truly you. Your gifts, the ones that enrich the world, are a part of God's plan to share more of His Spirit with the world. You are the paintbrush with which he paints his masterpiece and unlocks the beauty of heaven for others.
Know that greatness created you for greatness!
