Why do you call a computer a computer? Why do you call a car a car? Like me, you call things by their name because that is what you learned to call them. I remember, as a sarcastic young guy, kidding my wife that I was going to teach our children to call things by the wrong names. I would joke that I was going to teach them to call a pencil a banana, or to call a book a cup. That seems weird to think about calling things by the wrong names, doesn't it? It seems strange though because we reference everything that we experience in the present to what we have known from the past.
We experience an object solely by the references to our past experiences with that object. We look at a pencil and think that we "know" that it is a pencil because we have always called it a pencil. We look at a cup of coffee and know that it is a cup of coffee because we had a cup just like it yesterday. We even know what it will taste like because we likely fix it to taste just like our past cups of coffee. We do the same thing with our world of work as well.
We look at a sale or at coaching an employee and we experience based on our past experiences in those things before we even engage. We tend to label things to mean what we have decided that we want them to mean. What if we changed that though? What if we looked at our world and simply realized that we only look at the world the way that we do because we have been conditioned and have chosen to accept that conditioning? What would happen then? What would happen if you gave up the past meaning of things for something better today, right now?
I want to encourage you to look at your life and realize that you have only been seeing the past in everything that were experiencing. Look at your feet, or your hands, or your chair, or anything else to day and remind yourself that they only exist as they do because you have chosen to remember the experience that way. If you want them to exist differently, all you have to do is change the way that they exist in your mind. You are in control of that. You are in control of everything that you interpret, everything that you label, everything that makes up your world. Realize that the past is only the collection of definitions that you have embraced and you can change them any time that you desire.
