When I was young and at home, I planned on being happy when I got to move out of the house and be on my own. When I was in college and on my own, I planned on being happy when I graduated and got a job. When I graduated and got a job, I planned on being happy when I made a certain amount of money. Once I was making that amount of money, I planned on being happy when I had built my business up to the next level. And then, one day, I figured out that this deferred compensation plan of happiness that I was living with wasn’t actually the best plan out there.
I figured out that I could simply look for the joy in each of the events, the struggles, the opportunities that I was in the middle of. I shifted my perspective and gave up on the idea of being happy later and decided to simply be happy in each and every moment. When I choose to look for the fun and adventure in the everyday, I find it.
I ate lunch with my wife today and made an off-handed remark about what I would be like when I get old. I told her that I was going to really enjoy being old because I would hang out at coffee shops in the morning and eat out at lunch and laugh with my friends. She looked at me with a smirk on her face and said, “Isn’t that what you do now?” We got a laugh out of that because it is what I do now. I work in the coffee shop, I call it my coffice, and eat out and laugh and love what I do.
Are you living on the deferred compensation plan for happiness? If you have been, don’t you think it’s about time to live on the now plan? After all, you wouldn’t likely take a job and tell your boss that she or he didn’t need to pay you for the work you were doing. Instead, just save that up until retirement and pay you then. That wouldn’t work for most of us. By the same token, I don’t plan on waiting until tomorrow to be happy. I plan on being happy in each blessing of a moment that I am given. I hope that you will accept the challenge and choose happiness now instead of some day after some thing happens. Choose happiness!
