When I was first married, I asked my wife to play Monopoly with me. It had been my favorite board game since I was about 10 years old. My brothers and my cousins and I would play it regularly. In fact, we were known to have Monopoly tournaments that could last all night. The problem was that we had made up our own rules for the game. We didn't follow the rules as they were written. My wife, on the other hand, actually read the rule book and knew what the rules were supposed to be. Consequently, I discovered that playing by the rules that "normal people" used made the game no fun for me.
This has been a theme that has been prevalent throughout my life. Any time I have discovered what "normal people" do, I tend to run the other direction. I have always felt the constraint to be way too much for me. For many people, the rules make things safe, and predictable, and comforting. For me, I wanted freedom from the rules and restrictions of normalcy. A key lesson that I have learned, mostly because of my mentality, is that I am the happiest when I live in the land of relationships and not in the land of the rules.
In business, it is relationship that inspires an employee to be a top performer, not rules. In a marriage, it is relationship that inspires your partner to continue to court you even after they have you. In Spirit, it is relationship that connects you to the source. It is relationship that makes the game of life so much fun! It was never the rules.
The rules, or the self-imposed laws, that we use to restrict ourselves and to live in the reality of the ego are what keep us from the life we were always intended to live. Rules are the gravity that keeps us orbiting around the ego and away from the spirit. It is relationship that changes the game. It breaks us free from the bondage of the rules without relationship. It cuts the tether of restriction and unleashes the potential for perfection.
My challenge to you today is to live in relationship, not in rules. Smile because you want to. Laugh because it feels right. Love because it is what you were made to do. Make the world a better place because that is why you are here!
