“Worthiness doesn't have prerequisites.”
― Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are
I have always believed that each of us has a role to play in life. There is something that each of us was designed to do that goes beyond the social conditioning of what we "ought" to do or what our family and friends have pushed us to do. The unfortunate side of things is that many of us choose a career based on what we believe will make us accepted in the sight of others. We choose to be a doctor because that is what our dad or mom was. We choose to be a teacher because we were told that we should be one, but not always because we have chosen to be one.
We wonder if we are worthy and we make our choices based on what we believe will convince others to love us. This is simply the wrong path. It is the path towards unhappiness and disappointment. You are worthy because you are you. It isn't predicated on you going to college or being what your parents are. You are worthy because you have a part to play in this grand design. You know that you have chosen the right path when you are at peace. Peace only comes from accepting yourself and loving yourself just as you are.
The inner light that lives within each of us is a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. The darkness of the world around us allows us to shine and allows us to guide others. You play a part in moving the world forward, in helping it find peace. Your part is that of providing hope. Violence, aggression, living without trust, arrogance, and the like are all darkness attempting to be light. It just doesn't work though.
When I was a kid, I wanted to help people. I wanted to help them learn. I wanted to help them succeed. I wanted to help them be happy. I wasn't sure how to turn that into a career at the time. Today, I know that by being fully myself, by speaking and training and writing, I can do just that. Whether you are a teacher, or a preacher, or an artist, or an entrepreneur, or anything else, you are living as a light for others when you are fully you.
My challenge to you today is to take five minutes, several times throughout the day, and simply think about the great things that you have to offer the world. Think about what you are doing when you are at peace and then accept who you were designed to be.
