"Etiquette does not render you defenseless. If it did, even I wouldn't subscribe to it. But rudeness in retaliation for rudeness just doubles the amount of rudeness in the world."
Another election is in the books in this great nation that I love. I would have argued that the election last time was way too divisive. It pitted brother against brother and friend against friend. This election was even more aggressive than the last. Regardless of who would have won, this one truth remains. I am okay. You are okay. We are okay as long as we remember that we are to love one another. We are to look for the good in each other. We are to seek ways to work together and not apart.
When my kids asked me about the election before the results were announced, I said that half of the country was going to be mad either way. My hope is that none of us will be mad, or if we are, we will still be nice to one another. I always strive to respect all people for who they are. I have even found that the people of this country, regardless of party affiliation really want the same basic things. When we let go of our "need to be right" and focus on our need to "act right," we begin to see the truth behind the upset.
We want people to have a chance to get out of their bad situations and make their lives better. We want small business owners to be able to create jobs and large businesses to play by the rules. We want people to love and respect one another for who they are. We want success for our country and for our people. While it is true that we may go about in different ways, deep down, I still believe that we want good for one another. My focus for the next 80 years, not just the next 4, will be to find the good in each person that I encounter. It will be to choose being nice, even when someone else is not nice. It will be to strive to be the best version of myself that I can be because the world needs our best, not our worst.
May you be blessed beyond what you deserve. May others be nice to you and you nice in return. And when they are not nice, may you and I both be nice anyway.
"Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest."
