Tell us a little about yourself.
I produce a podcast and video blog where I interview people about the struggles they have faced and the victories they have attained.
If you would like to learn about the psychology of succeeding at a higher level, you will enjoy both of these. The content will be the same from the vlog to the podcast. Simply choose the format you prefer.
Psyche of Success Episode 1
Damon West - Be A Coffee Bean
Episode 1 – Damon West
Today’s episode is with Damon West. He is a best-selling author. He co-authored the book, The Coffee Bean, with Jon Gordon. Growing up, Damon was a starting quarterback in his 5-A High School and then a starter at UNT. He made a series of bad decisions in his life that landed him in maximum security prison with a 65-year sentence. He got out in under 10 years because he found a way to be useful and to turn his life around. You are in for a treat!
In today’s podcast, we go over the things that inspire, motivate, drive, and concern Damon. We begin with the quote that moves him forward. His three words are…
Position Determines Perspective
Define Success. Damon defines success as moving beyond just what you see on Social Media. He was in prison for almost a decade, but made it out and is now a professor, motivational speaker, and best-Selling author.
Success is defined by the relationships that we create and build. He is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. He does his steps, keeps his life moving forward, and surrounds himself with the right people. All in all, it is relationships that determine our success as well as our feelings of success.
What are some of the lessons that you learned?
He was sentenced to a life sentence in maximum security in prison in 2009.
Debts in life demand to be paid. We have to pay our debts.
Stay true to your raising. Don’t see race, see people. When he went off to prison, he was told to make his way back to his roots of love and caring for others.
When you are going into a situation where you are in boiling water, you have three options.
Be a carrot.
Be an egg.
Be a coffee bean.
Prison is a pot of boiling of water. If you put a carrot into boiling water, it turns soft. If you put an egg in boiling water, it turns hard on the inside. If you put a coffee bean in boiling water, it changes the water around it. It is useful.
When you intentionally have a positive impact on others, you change the world around you. You will attract the energy you put out. You can change the world if you are the coffee bean.
When you own responsibility for yourself, you can change anything in this world.
The power to change comes from within us. The one thing that we should strive to be is useful.
Life is a team sport. Sports teaches you to live your life on purpose. You let go of the problems around you and focus on the sport and the game. You learn teamwork, how to overcome failure, how to compete, and how to be the best version of yourself.
One of the worst things we have done in this country is to put the hyphen in the American designation. We have self-segregated and need to learn to love one another and get past the issues of race.
The next generation has a sense of decency and inclusion that brings hope. The best thing we can do is be kind.
What keeps you awake at night?
You have the choice to let things in this world bother you. You have the ability to not look at the things that you are bothered by. People aren’t having conversations. People are following the wrong leaders. In the absence of great leaders, we will follow the wrong ones. These are the things that keep me up at night. Without communication, we have nothing. I want people to be better, to grow, and to connect at a deeper level. This is what keeps Damon up.

What are your daily success habits?
You have to work out 3 areas every day… Spiritually, Mentally, Physically
Spiritual: Talk to your god and ask how you were today. Were you a good person? Did you live into your purpose? Are you resentful? Etc.
Mental: Stay balanced and stay kind.
Physical: Get exercise to stay physically well.
First thing each day: His prayer is… God, put in front of me what you need me to do today for you and help me to recognize it when I see it.
I control what I think, what I feel, what I say, and what I do. Those are the only 4 things that are on my line in life.
Make sure you play the tape all the way to the end so you can see what will happen based on what you do and will do.
Final piece of advice… Find a way to be useful in life!
