Even athletes at the top of their game have a coach, so what makes you think that as a top leader you no longer need the same development the rest of your team gets? What makes you above training? Michael Jordan didn’t become great and then just stop working on himself. He continued to show up and train under his coach, and he continued to work with and alongside his team. He is often referred to as one of the greatest athletes of all time, and yet without being on a team, he would not have been able to earn this title. You might be good on your own, but you can become great with a team to back you up.

One could argue that Michael Jordan’s success is not his alone. Instead, it is shared by the coaches who trained him, the team who played with him, and the people who gave him the opportunity to show up and show out. The same can be said for business owners and leaders alike. Greatness is not built in a day, and it is not built alone; it is crafted and honed with and through others. When you achieve what you set out to do, you don’t stop there. You look to the next great thing, and you expand your horizons. Those who believe they have already arrived can no longer be coached, but those who want to become the best continue to work on themselves. As you grow, your potential grows with you, and there will always be more to learn and more to do.

Not only is this for the betterment of yourself, but it is also for the betterment of your team. When you improve, your team improves. You have more to offer them, but you are also demonstrating the importance of professional development. You can never be above doing what you expect or require of your team. Stop looking at yourself as better than anyone else, and stop looking at anyone else as better than you. We are all made the same, and it is up to us to become the kind of person who inspires others, who earns respect, and who builds their team up. This sometimes requires us to turn our own coach so that we can learn how to offer the kind of support that our team actually needs.

Even Michael Jordan had a coach. Don’t be afraid to learn from others, and always strive to be the example that your team will follow. You may play an important role in the business, but so does the rest of your team, so start treating them like it. You don’t become the best without some guidance from others, support from your teammates, and the willingness to put in the work yourself. If you’re looking for a coach to help you grow within your own  business or profession, we are here to help you become the leader that others would follow. Don’t wait to better yourself; start investing in your development today.
