Team Development and Why it Matters

The success of an organization does not belong to a single individual. It belongs to every employee who has worked there and every customer who has done business with them. It belongs to the person with a dream and plan to make it happen. A successful organization recognizes the value of building strong leaders and cohesive teams. What may have started with one person is perpetuated by a multitude of people.

That’s why developing strong teams is more than just playing a few games and getting to know one another. Team development is an ongoing process of learning together, growing together, and producing results together. This requires a certain level of trust among team members. People need to be able to communicate openly and effectively, as well as learn from one another and rely on each other. Furthermore, they must align their individual efforts with the team’s shared vision and objectives.

Teams operate more efficiently when each person knows their role and leans into their individual strengths. When we recognize and leverage each person’s strengths, we maximize the team’s talents, thus increasing their overall productivity and performance. However, this does not mean that they work independently of one another. Their efforts are interdependent while still empowering individuals to work within their areas of brilliance. That’s why having a balance within the team of personalities, skill sets, and thinking styles can create unique opportunities for an organization.

Teams evolve into their highest potential only when we are intentional in our efforts to develop them. While individual development is still important, team development is integral to an organization’s effectiveness and sustainability. Every member’s contribution matters because success is a collective effort.
